Formal understanding is a humbling point.

As planners, designers, administrators, and general caretakers of public and exclusive education systems, we are tasked with the overwhelming: conquer a kid’s natural tendency to play, rebel, and self-direct in hopes of supplying them with a ‘great education.’ Reviewing, composing, arithmetic, and so on.

And this isn’t incorrect. This is great by almost any type of measure. Our intent is worthy, our effort remarkable, and certainly the knowing of many youngsters, particularly those from disadvantaged conditions, is much better than anything they could have had otherwise.

Yet there’s also an unfortunate, darker side to formal knowing processes– specifically when you crowd 800 in a college and 32 in a class and ‘hold teachers accountable.’
